Bonjour     你好     Hallo     Hola     Salve

What do these words have in common? They all mean “hello” in one of the five world languages Iowa Learning Online (ILO) offers for Iowa’s students: French, Chinese, German, Spanish and Latin. ILO’s world language curriculum, supported by Middlebury Interactive Languages™, is both rigorous and engaging and sets a solid framework for those beginning or continuing the study of another language. All world languages courses are aligned with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and support best practices in online learning and content-area instruction. Middlebury has identified several benefits to learning an additional language, including:

  • Boost your brainpower
  • Expand your career opportunities
  • Build a gateway to another culture
  • Improve your first language

The program of study in all world languages integrates a balance of reading, writing, listening and speaking to develop communication skills. Practice opportunities are abundant, including interactive experiences with native speakers of the respective language.

World languages are ILOs most requested courses and are offered in both fall and spring terms. Find out more about ILO's world language courses and course placement.
